Solheim Cup Qualification: How Players Make Each Team
Solheim Cup qualification runs on two different systems, one for each side. Team USA fills seven of its 12 places from a points list, two from the world rankings and three by captain’s pick.
Team Europe fills only two from its points list, six from the world rankings and four by captain’s pick. Both teams for Bernardus Golf were complete by 24 August 2026.

How to Qualify for Team USA
Two conditions come before any points count. A player must hold LPGA Tour membership and must be a United States citizen.
- The top seven players on the U.S. Solheim Cup points standings.
- The two highest players in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings who have not already qualified.
- Three captain’s picks.
The 2026 window opened at the 2024 FM Championship and closed after the CPKC Women’s Open, played 20 to 23 August 2026. Angela Stanford named her three picks the following morning.
The two ranking places are the safety valve. Alison Lee was on maternity leave for much of the qualifying period and finished well outside the automatic points places, yet her world ranking still carried her into the team. Andrea Lee held the other ranking spot for more than two months before the deadline.
How to Qualify for Team Europe
Europe asks for Ladies European Tour membership and European nationality, judged against International Golf Federation guidelines. Membership is the part that shapes seasons. Europe’s best players spend most of the year on the LPGA Tour, so they still have to build an LET schedule around it to stay eligible.

The European window ran from the 2024 La Sella Open to the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes, which finished on 2 August 2026. Anna Nordqvist named her four picks the next day.
That final week decided the last automatic place. Esther Henseleit lost a playoff to Shiho Kuwaki at Royal Lytham, and the runner-up finish left her on 134 points, 0.9 clear of Chiara Tamburlini. Charley Hull had long since sealed the other place on 264.18 points, built on two wins and five more top 10 finishes.
How Solheim Cup Qualification Points Are Earned
Both tours publish their scoring bands. The shape is similar, but Europe pays far fewer players at each event.

Both systems load the final months, and that is deliberate. It stops a player qualifying on form from two seasons ago and rewards whoever is playing well as the match approaches.
Europe’s narrower band also explains why so few players build a real total. Hull finished on 264.18 points, almost double Henseleit’s 134, and nobody else reached an automatic place on points at all.

Why the Two Systems Are Not the Same
The American route rewards a strong LPGA season directly. Seven of 12 places go to whoever earned the most points, so a player who wins early and often is close to safe.
Europe leans on world ranking instead, because its best players are spread across two tours. Only two places come off LET points. Six come from the rankings, which catches the players based in America.
That is also why Nordqvist had four picks and Stanford had three. A more open system needs more discretion at the end to balance the side.
The 2026 results show how far the same 24 places can diverge. Stanford’s picks leaned on experience, and eight of her 12 played on the winning 2024 team. Nordqvist used one pick on a veteran and three on debutants, so Europe arrives at a home Cup with four rookies.
Solheim Cup Qualification for 2028
The next edition is at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, from 8 to 10 September 2028. U.S. points started accumulating as soon as the 2026 period closed in the summer of 2026, so that race is already live while Bernardus is still being played.
The published split for 2028 is unchanged: seven on points, two on world ranking and three picks for the United States, two on points, six on world ranking and four picks for Europe. Neither captain has been named yet, and captains are usually confirmed within a few months of the previous match.
