Solheim Cup Qualification: How Players Make Each Team
Solheim Cup qualification works differently for each side. The United States takes seven players from its points list, two from the world rankings and three captain’s picks. Europe takes two from its points list, six from the world rankings and four captain’s picks. Both teams end up with 12.

How to Qualify for Team USA
Two things are required before any points count. You must be an LPGA member and a United States citizen.
- The top seven players on the U.S. Solheim Cup points standings.
- The top two players in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings who did not already qualify on points.
- Three captain’s picks.
The 2026 qualifying period opened at the 2024 FM Championship and closed after the CPKC Women’s Open on 23 August 2026. Angela Stanford named her three picks the following day.
How to Qualify for Team Europe
European eligibility is stricter than most people realise. You need three things before you are even in the running.
- Ladies European Tour membership
- European nationality
- At least eight ranking events played during the qualifying period
That eight event minimum is the one that catches people out. A European player based full time on the LPGA Tour has to plan her season around it.
- The top two players on the LET Solheim Cup points list.
- The top six eligible players in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.
- Four captain’s picks.
The 2026 European period ran from the 2024 La Sella Open to the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes. Anna Nordqvist named her four picks the day after the eight automatic places were settled.

Both systems load the final year heavily, which is deliberate. It stops a player qualifying on form from two seasons ago and rewards whoever is playing well as the match approaches.
Esther Henseleit is the clearest example. Her runner-up finish at the AIG Women’s Open, the last counting event, moved her into the second automatic European place in the final week.
Why the Two Systems Are Not the Same
The American route rewards a strong LPGA season directly. Seven of 12 places go to whoever earned the most points, so a player who wins early and often is close to guaranteed.
The European route leans on world ranking instead, because Europe’s best players are spread across two tours. Only two places come from LET points. Six come from the rankings, which captures players who spend most of the year in America.
That is also why Nordqvist had four picks and Stanford had three. A more open system needs more captain’s discretion at the end to balance the team.
You could see the effect in 2026. Stanford used her picks on experience and brought back nine players from the 2024 winning team. Nordqvist used hers on one veteran and three rookies. Solheim Cup qualification produced two very different squads from the same 24 places.

Can an amateur play in the Solheim Cup?
No. Both teams require tour membership, so players must be professionals. Amateurs compete in the PING Junior Solheim Cup, which is played in the same week at the same venue.
How long is the Solheim Cup qualifying period?
Roughly two years. The 2026 American period opened at the 2024 FM Championship and the European period opened at the 2024 La Sella Open. Both ran until August 2026.
